La- Trinidad - Abandoned children currently housed at the Reception and Study Center for Children (RSCC) in Wangal, La Trinidad was given an early Christmas treat when the Baguio-Benguet Public Information Civic Action Group (BBPICAG) presented a medical mission and gift-giving day to them last Saturday.

According to Rafael Valencia, Chief for Operations of BBPICAG, the members of the group wanted to give meaning to their usual Christmas celebration by sharing their blessings to the less fortunate. The activity was dubbed OPLAN: Share Your Blessings - a medical-dental mission, gift-giving and fun and games were offered to the 34 children of RSCC by BBPICAG together with its partner organization in civic action.

“We are happy that we are able to partner with BBPICAG this season, the children in our center are fortunate to have people who care for them. We are grateful for this blessing”, said Ms. Edelyn Genove, Center Head of RSCC. Most of the children housed at the center are abandoned by their parents and relatives are not able to care for them. They are currently being provided free psycho-social interventions, however, the center cannot provide for all the needs thus are calling for the support from the private sector.

To lend support to the activity, active partners of BBPICAG were at hand and provided the services of medical and dental doctors. Dr. Manuel Quirino of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) – Emergency Department and STOP D.E.A.T.H headed the medical team coming from the Baguio General Hospital -, the Department of Health, the Baguio City Fire Department – REMS. Others who sponsored the activity by providing medicines, toys, clothes, food stuff and other materials needed by the children were Sunshine Supermarket, Total, McDonalds and Dae Go Apparel.

As an off-shoot of the activity, the BBPICAG offered its emergency services to RSCC and vowed to assist the needs by being one of the advocates for social welfare and development. Dr. Manuel Quirino also offered his medical expertise by offering to personally look into the medical condition of the children. One of the wards at the center needs to be operated in for Umbilical Hernia. Other commitments were also set which will greatly benefit not only the children at the center but also other clients of the Department of Social Welfare and Development – Cordillera Administrative Region.

The RSCC is also looking for other good Samaritans to help the children have a better life by providing services or goods.
